The diagnosis of wear (degeneration) in the hip joint begins with an examination by your doctor. The size of the wear (degeneration) and possible causes are determined with the x-rays to be taken. Other tests may be ordered if other causes are believed to be contributing to the wear (degeneration). Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) may be needed to determine if avascular necrosis is causing the condition in your hip. Blood tests may be needed to rule out a systemic rheumatism or infection.
